Today I will write down a few words with facts, impressions and tips after an extremely welcomed and pleasant sun holiday in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. For making this more easy to follow and digest, I am tackling today two important categories such as location and weather.
The opinions you can read about here are strictly based on my personal preferences and experience.
Location, languages and currency in Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands
This old volcanic archipelago is located at about 28° N parallel in the Atlantic Ocean, having the nearest country on land, Marocco.
The islands are part of the Spanish territories and so if you are in the Canary Islands, you are 100% in Spain. This I consider a very important factor, as it is a very safe to travel and really enjoy the whole time spent there without having to look over your shoulder.
Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the archipelago and very well known as a hot destination because of the beautiful sandy beaches and the winds that are any water sport enthusiast’s fuel.
That also means that there is a big chance you actually speak the local language. Almost 6% of the world population speaks Spanish so in this case there is an extra reason to feel comfortable. In case Spanish is not one of your friends then maybe English is :)). English is largely spoken in the Canary Islands and there a lots of foreigners that permanently moved there to enjoy the pleasant weather and the ocean.
Location wise this place was simply perfect as there are several options of direct flights, and it takes no to much time to inform yourself of things you shall consider or be aware of.
Make sure you have: NON EU a valid passport (some non EU citizens have to check if visa is needed),EU ID or passport for European citizens, plastic and some Euro with you when traveling to Canary Islands. Click here for exchange rates.
Our Conclusion: Convenient, fast, safe.
Weather and sea / ocean water in Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands
Is not really wrong to consider The Canary Islands as having the best weather and climate in the world!
The weather in Fuerteventura as well as in other islands of the archipelago is pleasant year round. The place is very well known as having a perpetual spring with temperatures mostly between 17-30℃. During the winter the averages are 17-24℃ and during summer 21-30℃.
The islands are one of the sunniest places in Europe with over 320 day of sun per year!
No, I am not kidding! We got 7 of 7 days of sun during our trip but there were also a few hours of partly cloudy skies per day, everyday. We have been there in November and the temperatures we got were around 24℃.
The winds were generally warm and so there was not bad att all. Because of this windy weather, the place is ideal for all the board water sports and mainly for kite, windsurf and regular surf.
The sea/ocean water temperature in Fuerteventura, and I guess is similar in other parts of the Canary Islands, was about 22℃ so just right to cool yourself and simply lose time track when enjoying a water sport.
We would say a light wind jacket and a sweater is recommended especially for the evening walks. Hiking lovers may bring with them hiking shoes but honestly we did just fin in our running shoes. :)) For those who want to bike or do water sports everything is there already waiting to be rented.
Our Conclusion: Ideal weather for winter escapers, windsurfers, kitesurfers, sport lovers in general!
That was it for today and next we will take a few traveling options as well as accommodation.
Don’t forget to enjoy life every day!
